“Dec. 27 (Bloomberg) — Former All-Star relief pitcher Jeff Reardon was released on a $5,000 bond today after being arrested on charges of robbing a jewelry store in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Reardon, a 50-year-old right-hander who ranks sixth on Major League Baseball’s all-time saves list, left the store and was followed by the store manager. He was found a short time later by police at a nearby restaurant.
“Police recovered $170 and found that Reardon didn’t have a gun, according to the arrest report. Reardon blamed his actions on medications he was taking for depression and apologized for what he did when he was taken into custody, the report said.
“I completely lost my mind and tried to rob a jewelry store,” the arrest report quoted Reardon as saying. “I flipped on my medications and didn’t realize what I was doing.”
“Reardon retired in 1994 with 367 saves. He had a 73-77 record and a 3.16 earned run average in a 16-year career that started with the New York Mets in 1979.”
