Several weeks ago, my buddy Mat over at From the Morning posted a few videos from YouTube that are parodies of the “I’m a Mac and I’m a PC” commercials. You’ve all seen them, I’m sure. These parodies basically are an effort by a church to differentiate themselves and more or less - distance themselves from typical connotations of Christians and Christ followers.

It presents two stereotypes: the first is a stuffy, snooty guy who is well dressed by worldly standards. He is geeky and clearly is a square. He’s the “Christian.” On the other hand, the other guy is a “Christ Follower” and is very cool because he dresses down, is comfortable with himself and obviously has figured out a better way to worship.

When I first saw these, I loved them. I thought to myself, ‘Here is a church that gets it!’

However, I’ve thought about it more. Right now is a good time to point out that this is not an attack or judgement on the church that produced the videos, nor is it an attack or judgement on people who identify with and like them.

Rather, I have a different perspective on how I would have liked to see these videos play out. I have produced a small video to explain that perspective. I have posted it below. Anxious to hear your thoughts.

Brilliant. I had similar thoughts when I first saw the originals. Why would we try to create greater division when the scriptures tell us we should be living in unity?

Very nice. Starbucks, a place for all believers - at least the ones who love caffeine :)
