Nonsense

Rudy (Special Edition)About a year ago, I was at a conference in Las Vegas. Rudy Ruettiger was schedule to speak at one of our keynote speakers before we broke for the conference sessions that day.

This is the real Rudy who actually lived the movie role portrayed by Sean Astin. I always enjoy hearing inspirational talks by people like Rudy, so I guess I was looking forward to it.

As I sat at my table with some of my professional peers (me being the only one from my company at that table), an older, slightly heavy-set gentleman in a sports coat sat down at an empty chair and started talking to us. He asked where we were all from, shook our hands and was genuinely polite.

Minutes later, the emcee called Rudy to the stage. The gentleman stood up from the seat and walked onstage. While he talk was very inspirational, entertaining and even a little motivational – one line still stands out to me to this day:

“Quit worrying about nonsense.”

Today, I am still amazed at our collective inability to heed that advice. Too often, we worry (or gripe) about nonsense in so many facets of our lives. It’s very practical advice.

  1. That’s cool you met the real Rudy and that is good advice, but then again every one has a different idea of what nonsense is and isn’t thus the problem.
