Red DawnLast night, I watched for the first time in probably ten or fifteen years. I remember when that movie came out in 1984 – I was all of eight or nine years old. I didn’t really understand the world the whole idea of war. I didn’t really understand much at all really.

My friends and I would play “Red Dawn” in our yards and throughout our neighborhoods. We’d pretend to be defending ourselves against the “Russians” – whom we really didn’t know why they were our enemies. All we knew is that the movies portrayed them as bad, so we were to respond as such.

The opening scene of that movie – when these “bad guys” are parachuting to the earth below and then opening fire upon school classrooms – is one that has always been engrained in my mind. The sheer thought of being that vulnerable despite the feeling of security is downright frightening to me.

As I watched this movie, I couldn’t help but wonder how much our society and world has (and hasn’t) changed since the Red Dawn of 1984.

, , and many others in the film went on to have mega careers. Technology has advanced tremendously (I lost count of the number of times in the movie in which a cell phone would have come in handy). We’re still battling people who vow to inflict terror upon the U.S. We’re still just as vulnerable to widespread attack as we were back then.

Sadly, the acknowledgement and acceptance of God is still just as absent from today’s society as it is in the film.
