Anna Nicole SmithAnna Nicole Smith, the Playboy Playmate turned reality TV star and tabloid starlet has passed away at the age of 39. I have never much followed her career and this post is not an attempt to priase her life or the legacy she leaves; rather, it is an observation.

Smith’s life stands out to me as unique, to say the least. While much of her maligned lifestyle and the occurances during her time on this Earth were much of her own doing, she was a person. Clearly, she was troubled. Clearly, she experienced many moments of heartbreak, distress, trouble and perhaps abuse.

She often is credited (more like ridiculed) for creating her successes and rising to unheard of prospects. She represented glamour, chaos and the persistent ugliness that often exists in our society during her time. It’s safe to say, there are few - if any - who represented our current times like Anna Nicole.

Great post. It is interesting to hear reactions to her death, most of which involve ridicule.

It is tragic. I was never a fan, but these last months since her son’s death have been very tragic in the way that the press has hounded her. There were times when I wanted to scream at them, “Just leave her alone, she is grieving.” Very sad.

I think you may be saying a couple of different things, but we seem to be on the same page. You mentioned she was unique, but then said she represented, very ironically, some of the ugliness of society. In my opinion, the only thing that made her unique was the spotlight. I think the problems she had are all too common in everyday life. (Well, save for the billionaire 80 something she married.) Drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, weight and image issues–all these happen every day to millions of people. It is sad that it ended this way, and even more sad that people can continue to ridicule her. The spotlight made her known to many, and personally I mourn as I would for a distant friend.

Jason-I guess the point I was going for is that Anna Nicole Smith was unique in the way she was able to personify many very different - yet major - characteristics of our society at large; whether good or negative. She often represented disaster on many levels. But her success and achievements were emplematic of what might be considered a modern day representation of the American Dream.
