Snow Day

In 1982, the town of Auburn, Indiana had a blizzard. There hasn’t been much stow since then. There have been winters - but never one to match that winter . . . until now. Back then, I was six years old. I shoveled snow to make money. I made a fort under my back porch and I got hit by countless snowballs at the hands of my older brother and his friends.

One other thing I did that winter (and many winters thereafter) was to go outside and scoop a plastic glass full of snow and take it inside where I would pour soda, juice, Kool-Aid and any liquid I could think of to make a slush. People would stick their tongues out in disgust and tell me how dirty snow is and I endured countless jokes about the ill-famed “yellow snow.”

But I have matured a lot since those days. No longer do I make snow slushies.

Ice CreamInstead, I made snow ice cream.

A very simple process where you take some milk, sugar, vanilla, eggs and a large container of snow to make what turns out to be a concoction that is very close that of homemade ice cream - minus the labor and waiting. If you want to find an exact recipe, there are dozens of them available with a simple search on the ‘Net. I strongly encourage you to try out one of the recipes.

And if you’re not down with that, I got two words for ya! - “ICE CREAM”

  1. “pour soda, juice, Kool-Aid and any liquid I could think of to make a slush”

I did the exact same thing as a kid. I used mountain dew most of the time. My daughter is only 2, and she has started up the “eat snow cuz it’s good” thing. I just have to tell her what snow that isn’t okay.

I’ve had snow icecream before as well. I didn’t like it as much though. A lady my dad was dating at the time made it for me. I’m not sure how she did it, I just remember thinking it tasted bad. We have snow up the wazoo right now [michigan represent], and I’m going to look up the recipe and try it myself.

Also, good luck in the battle against me =) You have a nice blog here.

I was just thinking about writing about the snow snow cones just yesterday
