Last night, I was chatting with someone and half-jokingly suggested that every time you hear about wacko in national news – like people trying to jump fences at the White House, serial killers, etc. they have some connection to Indiana.
It’s kind of frustrating because is seems too common for my taste.
That brings me to the NBA and the Indiana Pacers. I used to root for the Pacers many years ago. But right about the time Isaiah Thomas became the head coach, I stopped watching them. After Thomas single-handedly took destroyed the Fort Wayne Fury and many other CBA franchises, I vowed to never again support the man.
Since that time, the culture of the Pacers has steadily declined. I thought the brawl in Detroit was the climax of the saga, but there have been many incidents since. I hear a lot of people suggest that the NBA is unfairly labeled a thug environment, but I sadly find that to be the status quo of the NBA culture.
And then, on the flip side, you have the Indianpolis Colts. We have one sports organization who makes it a point – from the owners to the coaches and players – who thank God for their achievements and are truly humbled by their achievements and the fan support they receive. On the flip side, we have a sport organization that enables thug mentality like brawls in the stands and players shooting off guns outside strip clubs in the wee morning hours.
I’m not saying that all the Colts are angels – heck, Dominic Rhodes was just arrested for DUI – but what I am saying is that the Pacers are not doing enough to rid the prevailing mentality in their organization.
