Thoughts on Civility 2

Let's get CivilIndiana does one thing really well. They implemented a voluntary no-call list that forbids telemarketers from calling people’s homes to peddle their crap.

It truly is wonderful to know that I don’t have to worry about it after having placed my name on the list. Unfortunately, the list falls short.

The list exempts non-profits and the Fraternal Order of Police (or any similar entity). Don’t get me wrong, I support our law enforcement folks and truly appreciate and respect their efforts. They are brave enough put themselves in situations where the rest of us would pee our pants and cry like ninnies. For that - and many other reasons - they deserve a certain level of reverence.

But gosh darn it! I wish they would stop calling me to ask for money in exchange for a sticker. I try to be polite and tell them that I don’t commit to anything via telephone - because the most likely telephone scammers will pose as this type of entity. I ask them to mail me something and I will consider it.

Sometimes I get something from them, sometimes I don’t. I guess if it ended there, I’d be okay with it. But it doesn’t end there. I’ve been called at least four times in the last week. One of those calls came on Easter!!!

Gimme a break. That’s not civil.

The book signing was well worth the trip. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, you should. It’s well worth it.

  2. Chad,

I know where you are coming from. We made the mistake of donating money to our local Fraternal League of Fire fighters and Police, and 5 years later… FIVE YEARS, their telemarketers are still hounding us. I’d rather just donate by paying higher taxes, because it sure would beat the alternative of them knowing that I care.
